The secret of the theatre
Did you know that in addition to the large display windows at the entrance to Ginza Maison Hermès, there is also a series of smaller windows? Studying the unique display in each tiny window—there are 16 in total—feels like catching a theatre production in miniature.
The displays are created by artists and designers based in Japan and overseas, who are given free rein to interpret the year’s annual theme as presented by Hermès. The current installation marks the 127th stage production—to continue the theatre analogy—to be opened to the streets of Ginza. Each redesign tells a new story starring new Hermès objets (products), offering pedestrians the chance to see what’s new in Tokyo’s creative scene. The only rule is that the two large front windows should feature Hermès objets as leads in the story. Only by looking at all of the windows, including the 16 smaller side windows, can you take in the whole tale.
