MAISON HERMÈS

The secret of the glass blocks

Built by architect Renzo Piano in 2001 and marking 23 years to date, the distinctive Ginza Maison Hermès building comprises some 18,000 glass blocks made by Italian craftspeople.

The glass blocks capture the different lights of the city, constantly changing with the time of day, the seasons, and the weather. They look completely different during the day than they do at night. The sun’s rays cause the blocks’ silver-coloured seams to shimmer, and when the sun has set, light spills out from inside the building, illuminating Ginza Maison Hermès with a warm orange glow. It truly is a magical lantern, lighting up the streets of Ginza.
