Away from the city’s passing gaze is a small garden where a single Japanese maple tree was planted when the building was completed 23 years ago. Thriving quietly since Maison Hermès opened, this tree has grown and matured just like the building, the people who have spent time nearby, and the essence of the city itself. The upper floors of Ginza Maison Hermès are home to an atelier, gallery, and cinema, where various sounds intermingle every day. The 5th-floor atelier fills with the rhythmic sounds of craftspeople plying their trade, from the high-pitched clanking of metal studs to the low whoosh of waxed linen thread passing through leather. The 8th-floor gallery, Le Forum, is an atrium where sound occasionally echoes in unexpected ways, creating mysterious sounds. In the fifth-floor atelier, the sounds of the craftspeople’s handiwork play rhythmically, from the high-pitched clanking of metal studs to the low rubbing of waxed linen thread passing through leather. 銀座メゾンエルメスは建築家、レンゾ・ピアノによって2001年に建てられ、今日まで23年の時を刻んできました。その特徴的な外観には、イタリアの職人によって作られたガラスブロックが約1万8千個使われています。<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/e92a277ab0e8454c8ed49667d50030d2/secret2404.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>街のさまざまな光を受け止め、時間や季節、天候によって絶えず変化するガラスブロックは、日中と夜とではその見え方が一転します。太陽の光はジョイントのシルバー色をきらめかせ、陽が沈んだのちには建物の内部から光が漏れ出し、銀座メゾンエルメス自体がオレンジ色に灯ります。まさに銀座の街を照らすマジックランタンなのです。

Built by architect Renzo Piano in 2001 and marking 23 years to date, the distinctive Ginza Maison Hermès building comprises some 18,000 glass blocks made by Italian craftspeople.<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/e92a277ab0e8454c8ed49667d50030d2/secret2404.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>The glass blocks capture the different lights of the city, constantly changing with the time of day, the seasons, and the weather. They look completely different during the day than they do at night. The sun’s rays cause the blocks’ silver-coloured seams to shimmer, and when the sun has set, light spills out from inside the building, illuminating Ginza Maison Hermès with a warm orange glow. It truly is a magical lantern, lighting up the streets of Ginza.

This month, we turn our attention to the hidden secret of the floor. The interior of Ginza Maison Hermès was designed by interior designer Rena Dumas, wife of former Hermès chairman Jean-Louis Dumas. Just as in Hermès Faubourg Paris Saint-Honoré, visitors entering Ginza Maison Hermès are welcomed by the Hermès Ex-Libris emblem—the mark of the maison (house of Hermes).<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/5155e59f62dd4f79a73b999f36056da1/Hermes_sercret_650x650px-2.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>In keeping with the spatial rhythm of the iconic “lantern”, Dumas made some minor adjustments to this emblem. As you walk further into the store, you may notice that, unlike the Paris store, the floor is not entirely done in mosaic. Instead, light-toned monochrome stones form the base of the design, with only part of the emblem composed of mosaic—finding these sections can be a delightful surprise in itself!

銀座駅の地下からエスカレーターで1階にあがると、そこには銀座メゾンエルメスの外部の空間でありながら同時に建物の中心部分に位置するピロティ（広場）に到着します。10階のプライベートシネマ、8階ギャラリーの入り口としてご存じの方も多いでしょう。<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/f0b008b8d1284b469755aacfa4d7b50f/Hermes_june_sercret_650x650px-1.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>ピロティから上を見上げると彫刻家、新宮晋氏の作品「宇宙に捧ぐ」が現れます。エルメス5代目のジャン=ルイ・デュマからの依頼でつくられた作品は、建物のファサードに沿って吊るされた3つの巨大なモビールからなります。この彫刻は銀座の光をとらえて、その光を屋上に設置された騎乗の花火師にむけて、そして街路へと光を拡散させながら届けます。新宮氏の「私は美術と建築との間の境界を取り去りたいと思う」という言葉のとおり、街へと開かれたピロティに自然ととけ込みました。自由に散策できるこの空間は、銀座に訪れたすべてのひとたちに向けてつくられた特別な場所なのです。

Ascending by escalator from the underground of Ginza Station to the first floor brings you to the pilotis, an external space immediately outside Ginza Maison Hermès that also lies at the heart of the building. Many people may also know it as the entrance to the private cinema on the 10th floor and the 8th-floor gallery.<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/f0b008b8d1284b469755aacfa4d7b50f/Hermes_june_sercret_650x650px-1.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>Looking up from the pilotis, the sculptor Susumu Shingu&apos;s work ‘Hommage au Cosmos’ appears. Commissioned by Jean-Louis Dumas, the fifth generation CEO of Hermès, the work consists of three giant mobiles suspended along the building’s facade. The sculpture captures the light of Ginza, directing it towards the statue of the cavalry pyrotechnician on the roof, diffusing the light down onto the street. Echoing the artist’s words, “I want to erase the boundaries between art and architecture”, the sculpture blends naturally into the pilotis as it opens to the city, creating a special space for anyone visiting Ginza to stroll freely.

銀座メゾンエルメスの屋上を見上げてください。そこには遠くパリからやってきた騎乗の花火師が銀座の街を見澄ましています。さかのぼること1987年、エルメス創業150周年を祝い、セーヌ川に大きなやぐらを浮かべ、設置された花火師像の手筒から色とりどりの花火が打ち上げられました。そのときの花火師像全6体のうちの1体が2001年の銀座メゾンエルメスのオープンに合わせ日本に運びこまれたのです。<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/97b41a7b3bbd4a0c8cd2db218a2e074f/H_sercret_7_650x650px-1.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>現在は、手筒の代わりに2枚のシルクスカーフを掲げ、そのスカーフは東京の風にはためきます。この花火師像は世界中を飛び回り、エルメスの各国メゾンを見守ります。上海、ソウル、ニューヨーク、パリを通りかかったら、運よく彼らと会えるかも！

Look up at the rooftop of Ginza Maison Hermès, where you will see a statue affectionately known as the artificier. Back in 1987, Hermès celebrated its 150th anniversary with a pyrotechnics show launched from a majestic floating stage on the Seine in Paris. The colourful fireworks were shot from hand cannons held up by six artificer statues. The idea of mounting these statues on rooftops began right here in Ginza where one of the six was brought in 2001 for the opening of Ginza Maison Hermès. Instead of wielding a hand cannon, he now carries two silk scarves that flap in the Tokyo breeze like flags.<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/97b41a7b3bbd4a0c8cd2db218a2e074f/H_sercret_7_650x650px-1.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>Since then, the rest of the artificiers have traveled to other parts of the world, where each one watches over a different Hermès Maison. Tucked away behind the 2nd-floor home collection area at Ginza Maison Hermès is a café. Customers are often surprised to stumble across the café, where diners can partake in fresh herbal teas, coffee, wine, and seasonal refreshments served on Hermès tableware. The menu prominently features dishes made with vegetables and herbs grown without pesticides or chemicals on a farm operated by Hermès especially for the café. For example, you might be able to order ratatouille when eggplants and zucchinis are in season.<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/e7784384ee584753ab8ecbfa241cf09b/H_sercret_8_650x650px-1.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>In an effort to pursue sustainability through food, tea leaves and other food waste produced by the café are turned into fertilizer and returned to the fields. Oranges are squeezed into fresh orange juice, after which the peels are saved to make a spirit—which is of course also served here at the café! Speaking of beverages, every drink comes with a Kelly bag–shaped chocolate—a favourite among our customers.* Special confections inspired by the Hermès Faubourg Saint Honoré store will be served in August.

When Hermès perfumer Christine Nagel visited the brand’s leather vault, she was struck by the elegance and velvety texture of the suede-like leather known as Doblis. She paired an olfactory note inspired by this soft, supple leather with an opulent rose to create Galop d’Hermès, a fragrance that manifests the dynamism of a galloping horse. Two materials typically seen as polar opposites—leather and rose—are exquisitely balanced to bring out the best in each other. And in a nod to Hermès’s origins, the bottle is shaped like a stirrup.

銀座メゾンエルメスには、エントランスの大きなウィンドウディスプレイに加えて、小さな窓がいくつも連なっているのをご存じですか？　その数なんと16枠。それらひとつひとつの中身は異なり、まるで劇場の中を覗き込むような楽しみがあるんです。<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/4461830c20a0460fbeeded9587a1ae8e/Hermes_Sercret_650x650px-1.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>国内外で活躍するアーティストやデザイナーをお迎えして、毎年エルメスが発表している年間テーマを題材に、自由な発想でデザインされるウィンドウ。銀座の街にひらかれた劇場ともいえるその舞台で主役となるオブジェが繰り広げる世界は、現在のもので127回目となりました。都度、異なる表情と物語を語りかけるオリジナルデザインのウィンドウは、東京ならではの最先端のクリエイションを知ることのできる場でもあるのです。その唯一のルールは、エルメスのオブジェを主役に、ふたつの正面ウィンドウをデザインすること。サイドにある16の小窓も含め、そのすべてをご覧いただくことで、ひとつの物語が完成するのです。

Studying the unique display in each tiny window—there are 16 in total—feels like catching a theatre production in miniature.<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/4461830c20a0460fbeeded9587a1ae8e/Hermes_Sercret_650x650px-1.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>The displays are created by artists and designers based in Japan and overseas, who are given free rein to interpret the year’s annual theme as presented by Hermès. The current installation marks the 127th stage production—to continue the theatre analogy—to be opened to the streets of Ginza. Each redesign tells a new story starring new Hermès objets (products), offering pedestrians the chance to see what’s new in Tokyo’s creative scene. The only rule is that the two large front windows should feature Hermès objets as leads in the story. Only by looking at all of the windows, including the 16 smaller side windows, can you take in the whole tale.

エルメスにとって、はじめての、そして唯一の社史が漫画というのは、ご存じない方も多いかもしれません。本格的に乗馬をたしなむ漫画家の竹宮惠子先生にお願いした、その名も『エルメスの道』（1997年出版）では、日本の文化を愛したエルメスの5代目ジャン=ルイ・デュマが独自の表現として見出した“マンガ”をとおして、1837年に創業したメゾンの長い歴史が描き下ろされました。2021年には、続編として「銀座メゾンエルメス誕生」「ソー・エルメス開催」「プティ アッシュ立ち上げ」の物語3編を加えた新版『エルメスの道』（中央公論新社）が出版。ここ、銀座メゾンエルメスも社史の大切な一話となりました。そして一昨年にははじめてエルメスの絵本が出版されました。子どもたちにものづくりの楽しさを伝えたいという思いから描かれた『エルメスのえほん おさんぽステッチ』（2022年、講談社）は、カラフルな作画が特徴的な2人組のアーティスト、100%ORANGEが物語から挿画まで手掛けました。フランス各地にあるエルメスのアトリエを訪れ、サヴォアフェール（職人技）の世界を体験し描かれた作品は、手でものをつくる楽しさや喜びが溢れ出ます。シルク製品をつくっているアトリエでは、色数分の版をつくりプリントを重ねるシルクスカーフ、カレの制作過程を見学しました。はからずも、絵本がつくられる工程、技法とほぼ同じであることに驚いたそうです。<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/a3ebab8baf264e86b3c0fbfb7726b9f6/Hermes_Nov_Sercret_650x650px-1.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>そうそう、漫画『エルメスの道』では、サイドストーリーや小さなエピソードが詰まった吹き出しにもご注目を。絵本『おさんぽステッチ』には、ちょっとしたサプライズな仕掛けもあるんです。これらの本が、これから先もたくさんの人たちの手に渡ることで、歴史や職人技の魂、ものづくりの楽しさやそれを分かち合う喜びといったものが、みなさんの心に届くことを願っています。

Not many people know that Hermès’s first—and only—book of corporate history takes the form of a manga. In Le Chemin d’Hermès (The path of Hermès, 1997), manga artist Keiko Takemiya, an avid horseback rider, depicts Jean-Louis Dumas, the company’s fifth chairman and an admirer of Japanese culture, as he tells the long history of Hermès from its founding in 1837. A new edition of Le Chemin d’Hermès was published in 2021, containing three new stories: “The Birth of Ginza Maison Hermès”, “The Saut Hermès”, and “The Launch of Petit H”. This edition positions Ginza Maison Hermès as an important part of the company’s history.For younger readers, there is Osampo Stecchi: An Hermès Picture Book (Stitching while strolling; published by Kodansha in 2022), the first picture book produced by Hermès. The title features a story and illustrations created by 100%ORANGE, an artistic duo known for their colourful drawings, which are designed to convey to children the joy of crafting. The pair imbues the book with the sense of joy and satisfaction that comes from making things by hand—which they say came into sharp focus when they were immersing themselves in the artisanal worlds of Hermès workshops around France. At the silk workshop, they watched craftspeople produce Carré scarves by using stencilled plates to print one colour at a time onto the silk—a process and technique that they were surprised to find is nearly identical to those used to make picture books.<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/a3ebab8baf264e86b3c0fbfb7726b9f6/Hermes_Nov_Sercret_650x650px-1.jpg" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>The caption boxes in Le Chemin d’Hermès are chock-full of interesting side stories and anecdotes, and Osampo Stecchi comes with a few fun surprises as well! 銀座メゾンエルメスの建物のさまざまな場所には、「45」、「90」という正方形のモジュールが使われています。その数は、ざっと5,000以上。一目見れば印象に残るそのガラスブロックは45cm角。4枚合わせれば90cm角のスカーフ「カレ」の大きさになるんです。ピロティの足元のタイルは、90cm角。店内で使われる棚と棚の間も90cm幅。建築家レンゾ・ピアノが銀座のメゾンのために宿した美意識は随所に光り、いつでも私たちの目を喜ばせてくれるのです。竣工時の1階にはガラスブロックが開閉する駐車場があったこと、建物の奥側の棟は2005～2006年にお店を営業しながら改修されて広がったこと、近年各フロアごとに改装が行われたことなど、言われてみるとそういえば、今も正方形を基調としたラビリンスはその姿を変えつつ、広がりつづけます。<figure><img src="https://lanterne.hermes.com/cms/3c85e5fa683f42a69726304c371e0ff3/038d593cedfc4cf583e74130b443c29a/Hermes_Sercret_650x650px_241118.png" alt="" width="650" height="650"></figure>この銀座メゾンエルメスは、マジックランタンとも呼ばれています。夜になり明かりが灯ると、まるでランタンのように正方形のガラスブロックのひとつひとつが輝き、エルメスのシグネチャーカラーであるオレンジ色に染まります。まさに、オレンジボックスの魔法。正方形の「カレ」に使われるオレンジボックスも、もちろん正方形なのはお忘れなく。

Hidden in various places throughout Ginza Maison Hermès are perfect squares—some 5,000 in all! Most obvious are the glass blocks making up the building’s iconic façade, which are each 45 cm a side; four of them will form a 90-by-90 cm square, which is the same size as a Carré scarf. The floor tiles in the first-floor plaza are also 90 cm to a side, while the display shelves on the shop floor are set 90 cm apart. At every turn, the aesthetic with which architect Renzo Piano designed Ginza Maison Hermès is apparent and pleasing to the eye.The building has seen many changes over the years—the first-floor parking area that was built as part of the initial construction (behind a section of the glass-block exterior that could slide open) is no longer in use, the rear wing was renovated and expanded between 2005 and 2006 even as the shop remained open, and each floor has seen remodels in recent years.
