Haruomi Hosono at the movies

Haruomi Hosono is a legend in the music world, known particularly as one of the three members of seminal electronic music band Yellow Magic Orchestra. What you might not know is that he’s also a cineaste. He talks about one of his favourite films—which also ties in with the “Drawn to Craft” annual theme—as well as a memorable first visit to Hermès’s very own Le Studio, located on the 10th floor of Ginza Maison Hermès.

      ――An unforgettable Indian
      movie at Le Studio

I visited Le Studio for the first time when I heard it was playing Satyajit Ray’s The Music Room (1958). I couldn’t miss this chance, since the movie was never officially released here in Japan, nor is it available in any media format. There is a performance in the film by an elderly man, who is magnificent—you don’t hear singing like that these days, and I got a little excited. I felt like I was being shown the essence of all music, and I felt invigorated. When it comes to Indian movies, most people only know about the films with a lot of singing and dancing. It’s amazing Le Studio was able to find a copy of The Music Room. And you could only watch it at Le Studio. It’s nice to still have a place like this that puts the public good ahead of profit.

      ――A “Drawn to Craft” movie

“Drawn to Craft” is the Hermès theme this year, and that makes me think of stop-motion animation. Last year, I went to Image Forum to watch The Wolf House, a Chilean movie directed by Cristóbal León and Joaquín Cociña.

Most of it consists of drawings, given movement with stop-motion animation. It’s like watching a painting being created by a camera. There are these long takes where the drawings move, but they don’t move the way they do in standard 2D animation.

Special screenings for The Wolf House—as well as two other recommendations by Hosono that echo the Hermès spirit—will be held in October at Le Studio, the privately run cinema in Ginza Maison Hermès. It’s a great opportunity to watch these cinematic classics on the big screen!

      Haruomi Hosono

Hosono is a musician who was born in Tokyo in 1947. He started his career in 1969 as a member of the band Apryl Fool. The following year, he helped found the band Happy End. He began his solo career in 1973 while also helping to found a new band, Tin Pan Alley. After helping form Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO) in 1978, Hosono started writing songs for other artists while also serving as a music producer and even founded his own label. Following the breakup of YMO, Hosono turned his interests towards the world music, ambient, and electronica genres. He recently performed at the end of the Hermès Ginza Calling show for the 2024 Fall/Winter Men’s Collection.
